At first sight this bird looked very much like an odd-shaped Caspian Gull. However, apart from the head and bill, there are rather more plumage features to support michahellis than cachinnans, including - an apparently dark underwing (direct sunlight and shadow makes this hard to judge) - tail-band narrower on the outer feathers than the inners - lack of pale tips to the greater and median coverts - scapulars could match cachinnans, but more typical of michahellis - not sufficiently clean in appearance
