These pictures by Richard Patient illustrate just how variable a Caspian Gull can be when it takes different postures. The first picture shows just how obvious they can be in a flock of other gulls. Everything looks right, especially the greater coverts. The second picture however on its own would be much more difficult to identify with certainty. Unusually, the greater coverts are clearly patterned.
