This bird is unusual, and my identification could well be horribly wrong. It is certainly a poor role model for a typical 1st winter Caspian Gull (no one has challenged this bird). Its head is not the usual pristine white, it still shows some streaking. Also the bases to the scapulars, though grey, are not as pale as usual. The underparts are rather dirty for a Caspian Gull. The coverts and tertials look standard. The bird also is quite advanced in its bill colouration, in the field, it looked grey-green at the base. In flight the underwing was white and the tail was very white with a broad parallel black tail-band.
