These were feeding on the beach, but were also see by other expedition members on the plateau above the beach, where they were presumably attempting to breed. The lack of Lemmings in Svalbard means it is a very scarce breeder. The race pallescens which breeds in Greenland is said to have a paler belly on average. I didn't get a good enough picture of the underparts to even hazzard a guess as to where these birds derived from.
