Although there are sight records of this species in South Africa, this may be the most southerly well photographed record of this species.

Note the diffuse shading on the side of the head. The underparts were noticeably white. The bird showed very white underwings (with just a narrow dark border) and blackish (not pink) legs extending beyond the tail in flight. How variable are these features in Balearic Shearwaters? The brown at the base of the neck is connected via the upper flanks to the dark under-tail coverts. It has a less rounded head-shape, shallower sloping forehead and slightly more slender bill compared to Manx Shearwater.
