 The Minsmere Curlew

Up To Cambridge and East Anglia

This bird was with a second bird that was even more strikingly marked; they drew attention because of the prominent eye-stripe, looking like a Redwing at distance. The breast was heavily streaked, changing abrubtly to a white belly and underparts. There was no sign of any warmth on the rear flanks. The head contrasted slightly greyer, the legs appeared black and they had striking wing-bars. The other bird particularly looked very like a Water Pipit, but we concluded that they were Rock Pipits. There were many typical dingy, olive-coloured Rock Pipits present feeding alongside on the same salt-marsh, with little or no eye-stripe, more streaking on the underparts and less obvious wing-bars. Presumably these are also Scandinavian birds.
